He was the Egyptian god of the sun, The sky and the underworld. In addition he was the god of Rulers and of order. Not to be confused with his brother the sky god Horus. Ra is the Ruler of the daylight which was important for a number of reasons.

As a symbol the eye of Ra represents the sun and the light. This is contrasting to the darkness and the underworld. Each day Ra travels through the underworld in his sky boat keeping the forces of darkness away. In addition he also represents light which grows the trees and creates life.
